Bookmatched Veneer
Veneers are made by slicing wood into thin sheets. Any two adjacent sheets have almost exactly the same grain pattern. If they are folded open like the pages of a book, one is a mirror image of the other. In fact, when veneers are arranged this way, the process is called "book matching". The picture on the previous page showed a cherry door with a bookmatched panel. The picture on this page shows an example of a "four way book match" or "Diamond book match". Four pieces of veneer are matched up in two directions.
Notice how the two pieces on the right seem darker than the ones on the left. This effect is caused by the way the light reflects from them. If you were to turn the table 180 degrees, the other two pieces of veneer would look darker. See another example of this on the next PAGE
